Color Theory Painting

This is easily the most fun I have ever had teaching color theory to middle school students. Learning color theory can be drab, but students seem to like this project because of the creative choices they are able to make within the assignment. It's also a confidence builder because the emphasis of the assignment is color, not drawing - I even let students find shapes in the room to trace.

I am a big fan of Creativity within Constraints when it comes to teaching middle school students. Students become intrinsically motivated when they get to make choices about their work. Basically I say a lot of "You can do whatever you want, as long as.."

CONSTRAINTS -

  • you explore 4 different color schemes within one painting

  • you only use one of the color schemes within the sections I have made.

  1. Value - White, Black, Gray

  2. Monochromatic - A color + White and Black

  3. Complimentary - Opposite colors on the wheel + White and Black

  4. Analogous - Family of colors close to each other on the wheel. (Warm, Cool, Top, Bottom...)

CREATIVITY -

  • You can use whatever imagery you wish, as long as you fill the page with 15-20 overlapping shapes.

  • You can place your color schemes anywhere within the 4 given sections.
